Salmon Run

Stainforth Force

Pay & Display Carpark

Postcode: BD24 9PW

The end of September to mid November is the best time to go and see the Salmon Run at Stainforth, as they pass through to get to their spawning grounds. From the carpark it is about a 15 minute walk to get to the falls. The safest way is to follow the path in the carpark, that takes you under the main road . Follow the path to the right so you are now walking alongside the main road and the railway. Then at the end of this path, take a left. This will lead you downhill to the bridge that goes over the River Ribble. From here you will see Stainforth Force. We got here at 9am and there was only a few people here. It's just a matter of waiting then and hopefully you'll see them leap up each falls.

From here we went back to the carpark to grab our bags and lunch and headed off on a circular walk of the Stainforth area. The first stop off was Catrigg Force. We had our lunch break here as it's a nice quiet area and spent an hour trying to catch the falling leaves and seeing who is the best shot with our catapults. Jubilee Cave was our second snack stop. Even though it was midday, we had the cave to ourselves. We chilled out here for a while, watching the farmer rounding up the cows on his quad. After here we decided to start heading back to our car. Taking the farm road alongside Winskill Stones which leads you to your final footpath on the other side of some farm buildings at Stainforth Scar. This then leads you back into the little village.

The kids wanted to test out their torches so we went to the Hoffman lime kiln which is only a few hundred yards down the road, BD24 9NU. It's just a big old lime kiln, but well worth a visit if you're in the area.
